West Creek Preservation Committee Timeline

1997 Concerned public volunteers form West Creek Preservation Commitee, under auspices of Ohio Canal Corridor.
1998 WCPC volunteers mobilize to pass Issue 69 for acquisition of West Creek Preserve. Voters overwhelmingly approve the request in November 1998. This was the first real step toward creating the West Creek Preserve.
1999 Watershed communities fund the West Creek Valley Management Plan.
2000 WCPC volunteers mobilize to pass Issue 138 $3 million bond issue, to buy about 100 acres of adjacent land that belongs to Gannett Communications Inc., the owner of WKYC.

Cuyahoga County Planning Commission holds series of public meetings to complete West Creek Valley Management Plan.

2001 Funded by Gund and Cleveland Foundation to establish West Creek Preservation Committee as an independent non-profit. West Creek Valley Management Plan completed.
2002 WCPC purchases critical 70 acres in Parma and Brooklyn Heights to expand Brooklyn Heights Park along the proposed West Creek Greenway Trail.

Dave Vasarhelyi recognized by the Plain Dealer as "Ohioan of the Year" with WCPC codirectors David Lincheck and Sue Zurovchak.

2003 With TPL assistance, waged campaign and raised $400,000 to save historic Henninger House circa 1849 from demolition-- earmarked for preservation as a major trailhead for the West Creek Greenway. Also, managed transfer of the key Gannet property to the City of Parma.

Received State Funding to hire first staff member, Watershed Coordinator.

WCPC successfully raises $1.68 million in grants to acquire land, build trails and hire first paid staff member.

2004 Recognized by OEC with Conservation Group of the Year Award.
2004-2005 City of Parma, Cleveland Metroparks and West Creek Preservation Committee partner and promote public dialogue series that results in the successful management transfer of West Creek Preserve from the City of Parma to the Cleveland Metroparks.
2005 Opening ceremony of Cleveland Metropark's newest jewel in the Emerald Necklace--West Creek Reservation.
2006 WCPC negotiates key land transfers that will allow development of the West Creek Greenway trail connector. The West Creek Greenway will link the Metroparks West Creek Reservation with the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Ohio and Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor.
