Join the West Creek Preservation Committee

By now you know that West Creek Preserve is on a path to become part of Cleveland Metroparks. It is a milestone for West Creek Preservation Committee and those who have supported us for so long. But far from being over, our work has just begun.

Why should you be a part of West Creek Preservation Committee? WCPC is committed to our mission of preserving green space and providing public access to the resources in the West Creek watershed. Your support funds two staff members who work on a daily basis to expand the acreage of protected land for wildlife and to expand trail opportunities that will link the Preserve and surrounding communities to the Towpath Trail of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and other destinations. We are also working to protect and improve the water quality of West Creek in Parma, Brooklyn Heights, Seven Hills, and Independence, so that our drinking water from Lake Erie stays clean.

We are a group that gets results. Together, with your generous support, our dedicated volunteers and staff can continue to lead efforts and partner with other organizations to improve our community in ways that we hope you and your family value.

Here are some additional highlights from the past 6 months:

  • Increased the amount of land protected from development in West Creek Valley to 436 acres
  • Funded the Crile landfill Remediation Plan as a joint project with the Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District by a $200,000 U.S. EPA grant
  • Stream Monitoring program initiated and four public workshops conducted as an on-going joint project with the Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District
  • Launched a stream restoration project along the lower reach of West Creek in Brooklyn Heights and Independence as a joint project with the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District funded by a $3.5 Million grant from Ohio EPA
  • Hosted River Sweep and RiverDay events in addition to sponsoring clean-ups and on-going discovery hikes
  • Began Henninger House stabilization with a grant from Ohio and Erie Canal Association to restore the historic structure for use as a trailhead on the proposed West Creek Greenway Trail.

West Creek Preservation Committee needs your support more than ever. We must continue to acquire land needed to create trail corridors and to conserve threatened wildlife habitat. Staff support is needed to build and strengthen our education, land protection, and community water quality programs.

West Creek is an oasis close to where we live or work. It is a place where you and your family can come to play, relax, and enjoy an experience of nature. One of the greatest challenges for WCPC is to secure funding. For this project to become a reality, the development of a reliable and broad-based funding package is crucial. WCPC proposes to form a partnership of non-profit, public, and private organizations to accomplish this goal. Currently, WCPC has a volunteer grant writing/ research team composed of motivated local residents. If you are able to help us write grants or can make us aware of potential funding sources, please email us at dlincheck@westcreek.org.

Would you like to receive e-mail notifications of West Creek announcements and special events? If so, please send us an e-mail to be included in our e-mail list.
